CAREER OPTIONS IN PHARMACY:

Pharmacy is a health science that links medical science with chemistry and it is charged with the production, discovery, disposal, control, a safe and effective knowledge of drugs their side effects, their mechanism of action, interactions, toxicity, and mobility.

Research & Development:

If you are really enjoying the core subjects like- Pharmaceutics, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology during the 3rd and 4th year of B.Pharma; you could consider a career in research and development. You can get R&D roles within the Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Agro, and R& D FMCG sectors.

Ideally need to have M.Pharma, Ph.D. degree, or MS. GPAT qualified candidates do get preferences. If you wish to purse M.Pharma from some of the top institutes like NIPER, then do start preparation from 3rd year itself. The B.Pharma course itself does not provide that much research opportunities. With B.Pharma background you can specialize in Pharmacology, Drug Delivery, Biochemistry, Drug Chemistry, etc.

Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Regulatory Affairs:

If not to keen about research and development still want to stay in the core domain- go for roles within QC & QA.   Masters in Pharmacovigilance or Regulatory Affairs and with few years of experience in Industry can really help you in terms of career progression and financial growth. Medical writing is also another less explored job function.

If you have got sound knowledge about Pharmaceutical Sciences, like being creative,  have got a flair for writing, happy with a desk job, possess attential-to-details then do try Medical Writing.

Manufacturing also involves QA/QC because each and every batch needs to maintain a certain level of safety and efficacy.

Analysis of R&D and Formulation Development(F&D):

People might consider QA/QC roles as boring. But, if you are skilled and intelligent, can make a rewarding and satisfying career. Assay validation and Assay development roles are really exciting. Pharmaceutical Biotechnology specialization or Pharmaceutical Chemistry will help you in this ole, also known as Analytical R&D. As like, formulation development(F&D) Pharmaceutical Chemistry Speciliazition or Pharmaceutic. 

Identifying new and more effective formulations is as important as finding new drug molecules.

Sales and Marketing:

The sales and marketing job function absorbs the maximum number of pharmacy graduates. The number of jobs available in the sales function is plenty. The salary structured is also decent. Of course, the job is challenging but rewarding as well.

You have to travel a lot, and do get chance to travel to new places in India and abroad. Obviously, the pressure of achieving targets are there, but the targets are quite achievable most of the time.

If you are dynamic, confident(go-getter attitude), pro-active, negotiating, travelling and making mone definitely, this role is for you.

Some people think that Medical Representative is just any sales job- WRONG. You have to advise the Medical Doctors about the Pharmacological effect of the drug, their optimum doses, side-effects, indications for specific disease and contraindications.

You always need to be updated with the current market knowledge, Scientific Research and many other things.

If you are a B.Pharm background, then you will have a various advantage during job duties.
